Nord-Lock announces improved washer with hydropower project applications

Parts manufacturer Nord-Lock has released a new series of products with hydropower project applications that offer a "new dimension of safety to bolt security", the company has announced.

Called the "X-series", Nord-Lock's said the new washers combine the company's wedge-locking protection against spontaneous bolt loosening with an exclusive spring effect that protects against slackening to settlement and relaxation.

"When you cannot say with certainty whether spontaneous bolt loosening or slackening would be the bigger issue, or when both could be equal risks, there is now a solution on the market," Nord-Lock Development Director Maxime Thonnerieux said.

Like Nord-Lock's original line, each washer pair has cams on one side and radial teeth on the opposite side, which secure the bolted joint with tension instead of friction.

The X-series adds to that, however, with a conical shape that creates an elastic reserve in the bolted joint which compensates for the loss of preload and also helps prevent slackening.

"Beyond vibration and dynamic loads, Nord-Lock X-series allows us to serve customers with a multitude of other challenging application areas, such as painted or powder-coated surfaces, soft metals, composites and polymers," Thonnerieux said.

Nord-Lock will be exhibiting at HydroVision International 2013 in Booth No. 838. HydroVision International 2013 runs July 24-26 at Denver's Colorado Convention Center.
