Marine energy developer wins grant for project development

MeyGen Tidal Turbine

Wave energy technology developer MeyGen Ltd. has been awarded a capital grant worth about US$15 million by the United Kingdom's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to further develop a tidal power demonstration array.

The project is being developed via the Marine Energy Accelerator Developer (MEAD) process and Europe's largest tidal energy proposal to have sought "consent to build" thus far, according to MeyGen.

"We are delighted to be awarded this prestigious capital grant following a thorough assessment process, and we applaud DECC for its continued support of the marine energy sector," said MeyGen CEO Dan Pearson. "The grant is a ringing endorsement of our project and will be used across all construction aspects of delivering the demonstration phase."

MeyGen's project will be located off the northern coast of Caithness, which is also home to the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Marine Energy Park.

The company said it plans to build the project in two phases with the first expected to produce 86 MW of power from six tidal turbines. Installation of the units is scheduled for 2014-15.

HydroWorld.com reported in April 2012 that MeyGen had contracted Kongsberg Maritime Ltd. to perform preliminary underwater noise studies on sites associated with the project.
