Mexican construction and infrastructure operation company Empresas ICA, S.A.B. de C.V. (ICA) has delivered the first of two turbines to the 750-MW La Yesca hydropower project.

As a result, ICA received its first scheduled payment of US$700 million, which the company says was applied to pay project debt in accordance with Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) contracts.

"The hydroelectric project is a testimony to the dedication of the more than 3,500 workers who are participating in the successful execution of this project," says ICA Chief Executive Officer Alonso Quintana. "The project will make an important contribution to increasing Mexico's renewable energy."

An ICA-led group was awarded the La Yesca contract in September 2007. The plant, which is located on Mexico's Santiago River, will include a 205-meter-tall concrete-faced rockfill dam, which will impound a reservoir of 2.39 billion cubic meters.

ICA says the second turbine has an expected delivery date "in the following weeks," at which point the company will receive its second payment. All of which, ICA says, will be applied to pay project debt.
