Avista Utilities recognized for commitment to environment

Northwestern power provider Avista Utilities has received special recognition from the judges of Seattle Business magazine's Green Washington Awards.

Avista -- which services a customer base of 1.5 million in Washington, Idaho and Oregon -- was honored for a 123-year legacy of clean power generation, successful energy efficiency programs and innovations in sustainable business practices, the company says.

"For us, doing business responsibly means doing it in ways that have the least impact on the environment and the most positive impact on our customers and communities," says Avista President Dennis Vermillion. "This kind of shared value is the backbone of our company."

The company was also named to a list of the 50 "greenest" companies in Washington at an awards ceremony earlier this month.

The Spokane-based company operates several hydroelectric facilities, including the 721-MW Clark Fork project, which received Federal Energy Regulatory Commission certification for unit upgrades in August.

HydroWorld.com also recently reported on rehabilitation work at Avista's 456-MW Noxon Rapids hydropower plant.
