Alstom receives orders for Colombia's 2,400-MW Ituango hydroelectric plant

Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) has awarded a contract worth about US$216.8 million to supply equipment for Colombia's 2,400-MW Ituango hydropower project.

The utility last sought bids for the work in December 2011.

As per the contract, Alstom will supply eight 300-MW Francis turbines, along with speed regulators, cylindrical gates, generators and excitation systems. All of the parts will be manufactured at Alstom's Global Technology Centre for Latin America, which is located in Taubate, Brazil.

The company says Ituango's first four generating units will be online by 2018, with the remainder to be ready by 2021.

The $3 billion hydroelectric plant is located on the Cauca River. Once complete, it will be the largest hydropower project in Colombia.
