Toronto Hydro continues restoration efforts following Hurricane Sandy

Officials from Toronto Hydro say only a few hundred customers remain without power following the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which initially left as many as 50,000 without power on Monday.

The utility says wind gusts as strong as 40 mph brought down trees, branches and power lines across Toronto, particularly in the East York, Scarborough, Upper Beaches, Leaside and Junction districts.

As of this morning, Toronto Hydro says fewer than 550 customers remain without power, and that those still waiting for electric restoration are scattered in small pockets throughout the city.

Toronto Hydro did not specify when those customers might regain power, but that its field and operations staff is working quickly to restore those connections.

Toronto Hydro's distribution base includes approximately 712,000 customers in Toronto. The utility distributes about 20% of the electricity consumed in Ontario.
