Study detailing U.S. hydrokinetic potential released

A report examining the potential for American hydrokinetic development has been completed, HydroWorld.com has learned.

The document, called "The Future Potential of Wave Power in the United States," was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy and compiled by California-based Re Vision Consulting LLC.

The 122-page report says "ocean wave energy offers a low air pollutant option for diversifying the U.S. electricity generation portfolio" and that the "theoretical ocean wave energy resource potential exceeds 50% of the annual domestic energy demand of the United States."

The study examines the theoretical, technical and practical potential for electricity generation from wave energy, as well as "cost reduction targets" at which hydrokinetic technology will see significant deployment within domestic markets.

HydroWorld.com reported earlier this week that construction of America's first Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-approved tidal power project had been delayed due to inclement weather.

Re Vision previously worked on a marine energy market acceleration study for the U.S. Department of Energy.
