RusHydro's 840-MW Zagorskaya 2 pumped-storage plant construction on track, but commissioning delays possible

Russian utility JSC RusHydro says the first stage of its 840-MW Zagorskaya 2 pumped-storage plant will be completed by the end of the year.

Construction of the US$122 million pumped-storage plant began in July 2007, and the company says two of Zagorskaya 2's three penstock tunnels have been completed.

RusHydro seems to have been considering the launch of Zagorskaya 2's first pair of Power Machines-produced turbines into operation on Jan. 1, 2013, but the delayed completion of a transmission line by Federal Grid Company (FGC) may move the plant’s commissioning date back a year.

The power produced by the pumped-storage plant would be implemented under Russia's capacity delivery mechanism,, which allows a grace period of up to 12 months should commissioning be delayed.
