Itaipu Binacional has recorded its second-best August in energy production, the Brazilian utility announces.

The company said its monthly generation for August 2012 reached 8,165,123 MWh, which pales only to the 8,744,406 MWh it produced in August 2008.

Much of Itaipu Binacional's energy comes from the 14,000-MW Itaipu hydroelectric plant, which is itself on track to break its own output record.

Itaipu Binacional says the Itaipu plant has already produced 74.8 TWh through the first nine months of 2012, which is 3.11 TWh higher than this point in 2008. The plant finished with a record yearly output of 94.7 TWh that year.

Itaipu Binacional's Sistema Inteligente de Alarma da Barragem (SIAB), a dam safety program, was recently awarded Project of the Year honors at HydroVision Brasil 2012.
