Uganda set to open 250-MW Bujagali hydropower plant

Uganda's 250-MW Bujagali hydropower plant will be officially inaugurated by President Yoweri Museveni as part of a celebration marking 50 years of the country's independence, HydroWorld.com has learned.

The US$860 million Bujagali plant, which sits on the Victoria Nile River near Jinja, is a public-private partnership between the government of Uganda and a consortium headed by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.

The partners formed Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL), which will own and operate the plant as per a 30-yeaer concession -- after which the government will assume full ownership of the project for $1.

HydroWorld.com reported in February that the first of five turbines was operational at the plant.
