The first of two hydroelectric turbine runners will soon begin its 2,073 mile journey that will take it from Weir American Hydro's manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania to the 1,003-MW Boundary hydropower project in Washington.
The Boundary hydroelectric plant, located on the Pend Oreille River near the Canadian border, is owned by Seattle City Light and produces roughly a third of the utility's power.
Weir American Hydro says the 90-ton turbine runners are being installed to help improve the efficiency and capacity of the Boundary hydropower project.
Transporting the turbine requires a 20-axle truck with police escort. Weir says the convoy will cross 13 states during its three-week trip.
