  • India, Bhutan collaborating to develop 600-MW Kholongchu and 570-MW Wangchu

    08/17/2012

India's state-owned Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam says it is entering an agreement with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation for the development of the 600-MW Kholongchu and 570-MW Wangchu hydropower plants.

The Kholongchu and Wangchu hydroelectric projects -- both of which would be located in Bhutan -- have already been the subjects of a project report that has been submitted to the Central Electricity Authority of India for approval.

HydroWorld.com reported in May 2009 that Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) had solicited expressions of interest from consultants to help perform a feasibility study for the Kholongchu plant.

SJVN also sought a consult to help itself better operate its growing project portfolio later in 2009 for plans that also include the 402-MW Arun 3 in Nepal; and, in India, Rampur, 252-MW Devasari (or Devsari), 45-MW Jakhol Sankari (or Jakhol Sankri), 56-MW Naitwar Mori, 775-MW Luhri, 1,020-MW Khab, and 40-MW Dhaulasidh.

SJVN is a joint venture between the government of India and the government of Himachal Pradesh.
