Nicaragua opens new 300-kW La Florida hydroelectric plant

WASLALA, Nicaragua 7/10/12 (PennWell) -- A new small hydroelectric plant is supplying communities in Nicaragua's Atlantico Norte region with a capacity of 300 kW.

The plant -- named La Florida -- is a product of the United Nations' Development Program, which is a partnership of Switzerland, Norway, the World Bank and others.

The Nicaraguan government, which developed and owns La Florida, received technical assistance and about US$2.5 million for the plant's design, construction, equipment, transmission lines and other costs.

Nicaragua has installed about 1.5 MW of total hydropower capacity since 2007. The country says it wants 80% of its power to be produced by renewable sources by 2016.

HydroWorld.com reported earlier this month that the country is soliciting bids for the study of small hydro potential in two river basins, and bids for the construction of the 2.5-MW Montecristo hydroelectric plant were also being solicited.
