Mudslide leaves more than three dozen dead or missing at China's 12,000-MW Baihetan

SICHUAN PROVINCE, China 7/10/12 (PennWell) -- A mudslide at the construction zone of China's 12,000-MW Baihetan hydropower plant has left at least 14 people dead and 26 missing, according to Chinese news sources.

Reports say the mudslide was triggered by heavy rainfall in China's southwest region and that all the victims were workers or family members who were living on-site in a three-story structure.

The Baihetan hydroelectric project -- located on the Jinsha River -- was approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission in 2006 to help alleviate silt buildup at the Three Gorges Dam, which is located downstream.
