  • Hydro Review inducts three historic plants into 2012 Hydro Hall of Fame

The Ocoee No. 1, Prospect No. 1 and LaGrande Dam Powerhouse are the 2012 inductees into Hydro Review’s Hydro Hall of Fame.

Elizabeth Ingram, senior editor of Hydro Review, presented the awards to representatives of the three facilities at the closing luncheon of the HydroVision International 2012 event, which was held July 17-20 in Louisville, Ky.

The Hydro Hall of Fame recognizes extraordinary hydro achievement throughout North America, with a special emphasis on long-lasting facilities. Since 1995, 33 plants in the U.S. and Canada that have been operating continuously for 100 years or more have been presented with this designation. Together, this prestigious group demonstrates the long-lasting and significant contributions of hydroelectric plants, including clean renewable power, emission-free generation and reliability.

The 22-MW Ocoee No. 1 dam and powerhouse, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority, was commissioned in 1912 by the Tennessee Electric Power Company. TVA purchased the facility in 1938. It is one of three facilities in what is commonly referred to as the Parksville Project and is located in southeastern Tennessee on the Ocoee River. Ocoee No. 1 is one of the two oldest facilities owned by TVA.

PacifiCorp’s 4.6-MW Prospect No. 1 was commissioned in 1912 and is part of a system of powerhouses on the Rogue River in Jackson County, Oregon. The facility is unique in that it still uses its original wooden powerhouse structure.

The 64-MW LaGrande Dam powerhouse, built in 1912, is owned by Tacoma Power. It is one of two projects on Washington’s Nisqually River. The facility was originally built with four 6-MW generators, but in 1945 a fifth generator with 40 MW of capacity was added.

Articles featuring each of these historic projects will be published in upcoming issues of Hydro Review.
