VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada 7/9/12 (PennWell) -- Canadian utility BC Hydro has contracted power and automation technology group ABB to increase the transmission capacity of new and existing power lines.
The deal, worth about US$55 million, will see ABB design, supply, install and commission three series capacitors at two facilities.
"These installations will enhance transmission capacity and provide more clean hydropower to consumers in the region," says Koch, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "ABB's advanced series capacitor technology will also help improve grid reliability and power quality."
BC Hydro's decision to increase its capacity comes largely in response to an anticipated surge of demand in the coming decades.
HydroWorld.com reported in May that ABB had been selected to provide $20 million of refurbishment work at two hydropower plants in Switzerland.
BC Hydro has nearly 11,000 MW of total hydropower generating capacity spread across 31 facilities.
