LUDINGTON, Mich. 6/21/12 (PennWell) -- Konecranes has been selected to supply two 410-ton gantry cranes as part of the Ludington Pumped-Storage Plant's US$800 million maintenance and upgrade project, HydroWorld.com has learned.
The pumped-storage facility, which is owned by the Consumers Energy Company and Detroit Edison Company -- needed the gantry cranes for installation of a new 810-ton generator stator. Konecranes says the cranes it is installing will work in tandem to lift the unit, saving "substantial time."
The upgrades to Ludington will increase the plant's generating capacity from its current 1,872 MW to about 2,172 MW.
HydroWorld.com reported in February that a new barge dock had been completed at the project, allowing for the reception of six 290-ton turbine runners.
