Colombia's 19.9-MW Hidromontanitas hydroelectric plant operational

MEDELLIN, Colombia 6/18/12 (PennWell) -- Colombian power company Celsia has begun commercial operation of its 19.9-MW Hidromontanitas hydropower project, HydroWorld.com has learned.

The US$70 million hydroelectric complex, located in Colombia's Antioquia department, sits on the Rio Grande River near Santa Rosa de Osos and Donmatias.

Celsia president Juan Guillermo says commissioning of the new plant is another step in the company's expansion program, which also includes the 352-MW Porvenir II hydropower project.

HydroWorld.com reported in May about a Center for International Environmental Law study that examined the potential effects of hydroelectric development in the Amazonian region.
