Work on 90-MW Rusumo Falls hydropower plant expected to begin soon

KIGALI, Rwanda 5/9/12 (PennWell) -- Work on the 90-MW Rusumo Falls hydroelectric plant is set to begin soon, says Rwandan Minister of Infrastructure Albert Nsengiyumva.

Developer Nile Equatorial Lakes sought applications for a project manager as recently April, although the project has been pending the endorsement of residents affected by the 386-square-kilometer reservoir the hydropower plant will create.

Now, officials say, approval has been given and relocation plans made, allowing for construction of the project that will affect not only Rwanda, but also Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania.

The project is part of the multi-nation Nile Basin Initiative. Power generated by the Rusumo Falls plant will be distributed to several countries along the Kagera River.
