Hatch Group acquires Brazilian engineering firm

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil 5/10/12 (PennWell) -- The Hatch Group is expanding its South American presence with the recent acquisition of Brazilian engineering firm MEK Engenharia.

MEK, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, was established 22 years ago and has designed nearly 70 hydropower plants. The firm says these facilities have a combined capacity of more than 6,000 MW.

MEK chief executive officer Mohy Kamel says the partnership with Hatch is a natural fit for both companies. "We will be able to leverage the skills, experience, methods and tools of one of the world's leading engineering, procurement and construction management firms as we continue to deliver on our promise to clients," Kamel says.

Brazil is the largest electricity market in South America, according to Hatch, with about 70% of the country's electricity currently generated through hydropower.

Hatch is headquartered in Ontario, Canada, but has more than 11,000 employees spread across 65 offices in more than 150 countries.
