Fortum announces refurbishments at 130-MW Holjes hydropower facility

VARMLAND, Sweden 5/30/12 (PennWell) -- European energy producer Fortum has announced it will refurbish its 130-MW Holjes hydropower plant at a cost of nearly US$63 million over the next four years.

The refurbishments are being made to meet current dam safety requirements and include a new spillway gate, widening of the spillway chute and increasing the dam's erosion resistance.

Fortum says work at the site will begin in summer 2012 and be completed in 2015. NCC Construction will serve as the project's main contractor.

The Holjes refurbishment project is part of Fortum's annual hydropower investment program.

HydroWorld.com reported in April that Fortum had transferred ownership of 14 small hydropower plants to Kosienergia Oy, although the company still has a hydroelectric capacity of about 4,700 MW in the Nordic countries.
