BRASILIA, Brazil 2/28/12 (PennWell) -- State-owned news agency Agencia Brasil has announced that the first turbine at the 3,150-MW Santo Antonio hydroelectric plant should be operational by March.
When complete, the US$9.3 billion facility will feature 44 turbines -- each of which is capable of supplying enough energy for 350,000 homes. The remaining turbines will be operational by 2015.
The plant was originally to have opened in December 2011, according to project owner Santo Antonio Energia. It was given environmental approval in September 2011.
