Pacific Hydro launches Chilean hydropower station

RANCAGUA, Chile 12/2/11 (PennWell) -- Pacific Hydro has inaugurated the 111-MW Chacayes run-of-river hydroelectric facility in Chile's Alto Cachopoal Valley.

The new Chacayes station cost US$450 million and is the first of six run-of-river stations Pacific Hydro will build in the valley.

"To reach the growth goals, the energy sector is absolutely indispensable," Chilean Minister of Energy Rodrigo Alvarez says. "We think that water is a relevant element in our energy matrix."

Pacific Hydro owns about 73 percent of the Chacayes power station, while Italian constructor Astaldi owns the remainder.
