Enercon connects 10-MW hydropower plant to Bremen grid

BREMEN, Germany 12/14/11 (PennWell) -- A four-year project took a step closer to its completion recently as the first of two Enercon hydroelectric turbines was connected to Bremen's power grid.

The second turbine is expected to be online by the end of 2011, pending evaluation of the first unit. It is expected that the US$75.5 million project will provide an capacity of 10- MW to supply 17,000 homes along the Weser River.

Project developer Weserkraftwerk Bremen GmbH awarded the contract to Enercon in July 2007. Enercon, whose experience in renewable energy had previously been limited largely to wind power, was selected for the project after demonstrating that its variable speed wind technology could be adapted to handle water flows.
