Northern Ireland seeks to restore historic Roe Valley hydro plant

BELFAST, Northern Ireland, U.K. 11/29/11 (PennWell) -- The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) invites applications for pre-qualification to restore a historic hydroelectric project at Roe Valley Country Park in Limavady, County Londonderry. Responses are due December 9.

NIEA proposes a design-build contract for the Roe Valley Country Park Hydroelectric Power Restoration Scheme, which involves installation of a hydropower turbine within an existing historic powerhouse.

Other work includes construction of a concrete inlet structure and spillway near existing waterways, repairs to the Mill Race Structure, trench excavation and laying a penstock from the Mill Race to the turbine intake tunnel, work within the existing tunnel and turbine chamber, alteration of the tailrace, and removal and protection of historic existing equipment. The work is valued at between 750,000 pounds and 1 million pounds (US$1.17 million and US$1.56 million).

On behalf of NIEA, the Central Procurement Directorate plans to shortlist about five firms for invitations to bid.
