Alstom to open new global technology center for hydropower in Brazil

TAUBATE, Brazil 11/29/11 (PennWell) -- Alstom will establish a new Global Hydro Technology Centre in Brazil.

The 6 million euro facility will be located in Taubate, which is already home to Alstom’s larget hydro factory.

The Global Technology Centre-Taubate will focus on Kaplan hydro turbines, says Patrick Kron, chief executive officer and chairman of Alstom. A research and development team comprised of French and Brazilian specialists is expected to begin activity in early 2012, with a test rig operating at the facility by mid-2013.

The facility will be used to test Kaplan turbines for projects in Brazil and Asia.

Alstom's Kaplan turbines have already been used in China's 400-MW Longkou project and Brazil's 1,540-MW Porto Primavera (also known as Sergio Motta). The company was also recently awarded contracts worth more than $500 million for Kaplan turbine projects in Brazil and Peru.

The Taubate facility is the second such facility opened by Alstom in the past month. Earlier, the company announced it will open another Global Technology Center in the Canadian town of Sorel-Tracy.
