BRISTOL, United Kingdom 10/20/11 (PennWell) -- The United Kingdom's Crown Estate has approved an agreement for lease off the coast of Anglesey, north Wales, to Marine Current Turbines Ltd. (MCT) for development of the 10-MW Skerries Tidal Stream Array.
The Crown Estate, which protects and manages government resources to benefit the taxpayer, is to issue a lease to MCT once the Wales government grants required environmental consents for Skerries. MCT, in partnership with RWE npower renewables, submitted a consent application in March to install the array of tidal stream turbines in 2015.
The array, of up to nine twin-rotor SeaGen turbines arranged across half a square kilometer, is to use tidal power to generate enough electricity for more than 10,000 homes on Anglesey Island. MCT said it is to be the first tidal array to be deployed in Wales.
MCT said it now is ramping up efforts to finance the project, which is expected to cost 70 million pounds (US$110.2 million). The developer said it already has received funding from the Welsh European Funding Office.
