  • Eight hydro projects to compete in power auction, HydroVision Brazil told

During the HydroVision Brazil conference and exhibition, the head of Brazil's energy research agency, Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica (EPE), revealed details of Brazil's next energy auction.

EPE Chairman Mauricio Tolmasquim reported at HydroVision Brazil, last month in Rio de Janeiro, that developers of eight new hydroelectric projects totaling 1,750 MW have qualified to sell electricity in Brazil's next electricity auction, designated A-5, on December 20.

Tolmasquim said the eight projects represent an investment of 7 billion reais (US$3.97 billion). Projects are 63-MW Cachoeira, 64-MW Castelhano, 56-MW Estreito Parnaiba, and 113-MW Ribeiro Goncalves, all on Parnaiba River; 219-MW Cachoeira Caldeirao on Araguari River; 135-MW Sao Roque on Canoas River; 700-MW Sao Manoel and 400-MW Sinop on Teles Pires River.

The auction attracted interest from a total of 377 electricity producers, powered by hydro, wind, natural gas, sugar cane waste, and wood chips, totaling 24,253.6 MW. In addition to the eight larger hydro projects, another four hydro projects are competing to sell a total of 584.3 MW from project enlargements. Another 19 small hydro projects also are competing to sell a total of 302.6 MW.

More than 650 people from more than 30 countries attended the first-ever HydroVision Brazil. Eighty-three companies from throughout the world exhibited.

In addition to Tolmasquim, participants heard from utility executives representing Eletrobras, Itaipu, and Copel and from directors of national development bank Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social (BNDES) and regulator Agencia Nacional de Energia Eletrica (ANEEL).

Papers and presentations from the more than 60 speakers in the conference sessions are available on the event website -- www.hydrovisionbrazil.com. These are password protected.
