Voith Hydro to modernize Russia's 1,360-MW Saratovskaya

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia 9/27/11 (PennWell) -- Russian hydropower utility RusHydro has signed a contract with Voith Hydro St. Polten for modernization of the 1,360-MW Saratovskaya hydroelectric project in the Volga-Kama hydropower cascade of southwestern Russia.

Voith said its order value amounts to 140 million euros (US$190.8 million) to upgrade the first five Kaplan turbines, each with a diameter of 10.3 meters. The work is to increase capacity of each unit to 68 MW from 60 MW.

Voith said it would modernize the units in different stages in close cooperation with a Russian partner. Voith said the companies signed a memorandum of understanding for establishment of a joint manufacturing site in Russia.

Russian equipment manufacturer Power Machines said this month it approved a deal with Voith Hydro but did not disclose details. Power Machines has had a partnership with RusHydro for renovation of hydro units at Saratovskaya and other projects in the 10,000-MW Volga-Kama cascade.

Emerson Process Management signed an agreement with RusHydro in August for process automation projects to improve the reliability and availability of Saratovskaya and the 2,541-MW Volzhskaya and 1,020-MW Votkinskaya plants.
