  • GDF Suez: Expansion planned for Jirau hydro project

France-based utility GDF Suez reported that the Jirau hydropower project in Brazil will be expanded from the original concession of 44 units to 50 units.

The announcement followed the successful outcome of the A-3 energy auction.

The expansion will increase total capacity of the power project under construction on the Madeira River from the initial 3,300 MW to 3,750 MW.

Each unit of the Jirau project has a generating capacity of 75 MW.

A majority of the project's output has been contracted under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).
