Malaysia's Sarawak plans to boost hydropower capacity, other power by 2020

The state government of Sarawak has announced plans to build up to 6,200 MW of additional installed power capacity by 2020, with hydropower making up a large percentage of the added capacity.

These plans are being established under the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.

State public utilities minister Awang Tengah said approximately 80 percent of this will be hydropower, including the 2,400-MW Bakun Hydropower project and the 944-MW Murum hydro project.

He said that the state's current installed capacity is 1,250 MW, but that the Bakun project, due to start operations this August, was not adequate to meet the projected demand.

"Pending the outcome of the feasibility studies, which will comprehensively address technical, commercial, social and environmental issues, we anticipate that there will be at least five more hydropower plants and one or two coal fired power plants built by 2020 to meet the projected demand," Tengah added.
