Chile: Court orders suspension of 2,750-MW HidroAysen hydropower project

A Chilean court has ordered the suspension of work on the recently-approved US$3.5 billion HidroAysen hydropower project in Chile, wire services reported.

HidroAysen, a joint venture between generators Endesa Chile and Colbun, comprises five hydropower stations and plans to generate 2,750 MW by damming two major rivers.

The appeals court in the southern city of Puerto Montt said the order was issued following legal injunctions filed by opponents of the hydro project, reports indicate.

The project has sparked protests over environmental concerns.

In May, Chilean environmental regulators gave the green light to the HidroAysen hydropower project, approving the hydro project in a vote broadcast live on television.
