  • Second unit at 2,400-MW Son La hydro project in Vietnam connected to grid

    04/26/2011

The second of six 400-MW turbines at Southeast Asia's largest hydroelectric power station, the Son La hydro project in Vietnam, has begun operation, news agencies reported.

The first turbine was connected to the national power grid in 2010.

The US$2 billion, 2,400-MW hydroelectric power plant is expected to be fully-operational by 2012, three years ahead of the target set by the National Assembly, local media reported. Construction began in December 2005.

The second generator is expected to help reduce power shortages during the dry season by supplying at least 1.1 billion kWh, annually, reports indicate.

The Son La hydro project is located in the mountainous northern Son La province's Muong La district. Investment in the project totals more than US$2 billion.
