Laos has deferred a decision on constructing the Xayaburi dam and 1,285-MW hydro project on the lower Mekong River, news agencies reported.
A meeting of officials from Laos' neighboring countries concluded the decision had to go to ministerial level, BBC reported.
Opponents had feared the Xayaburi dam, which would be the first dam on the Mekong's lower mainstream, would open the way for as many as 10 other dams on the Mekong's lower mainstream, degrading the river's fragile ecology, reports indicate.
