Worldwide, a growing number of industries, including fisheries management and underwater construction, are employing Sound Metrics imaging sonars, with the firm reporting record sales for last year.
In 2009, Sound Metrics' sales were up 41 percent. In 2010, that number increased by 52 percent, the Washington-based firm said in a press release.
"Our sonars are used in a lot of different places for a wide range of applications - monitoring the laying of oil pipe off the coast of Mexico, assessing hurricane damage to bridges in Texas, assisting with victim recovery in Florence, Italy," said Joe Burch, co-founder and president of Sound Metrics. "But what they all have in common is that the operation's success or failure relies on whether or not they have good, clear data."
Officially incorporated in 2002, Sound Metrics Corp. was one of the first companies to develop and manufacture acoustic lens imaging sonars for commercial use, a press release states.
"Really, our audience is anyone, anywhere in the world, who has to work in turbid water," Burch said. "As we continue to grow and refine our products, we want to help these people do what they need to have done."
