Construction advances at Simplicio hydropower project in Brazil

Brazil's 334-MW Simplicio hydropower complex is more than 70 percent complete and is set to be concluded on time for inauguration in late August, a spokesperson for the Brazilian state-run power company Eletrobras Furnas told wire services.

The 2.2 billion-real (US$1.3 billion) hydropower complex is being developed and will be operated by federal power company Eletrobras Furnas alone, Business News Americas reported.

Simplicio is located in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

The Simplicio hydro complex is part of the federal government infrastructure program, dubbed PAC.

In other news, Brazilian consortium Norte Energia has started earthmoving works at the site where it will build the 11,200-MW Belo Monte hydropower project.
