Swiss hydro producer Ofima SA has finished the installation of one of the world's largest double horizontal Pelton-turbines in their Bavona hydropower plant. The unit was delivered by Norwegian Rainpower and has a capacity of 41 MW.
The generators for the hydro project have been delivered by Alstom.
Rainpower's contract with Ofima (Officine Idreolettriche della Maggia SA) includes also delivery of second turbine which will be put into operation in 2011. Rainpower's total contract with Ofima has a value of more than NOK 200 million (US$34.3 million).
Bavona power plant was build in 1966, and is one of newest power plants in Valla Bavona in Locarno in the canton Ticino. The complete refurbishement project will be finished within 18 months and one of the units in the power plant is in continuous operation during the refurbishment period.
The turbine output will be increased from a capacity of 138 MW up to 165.2 MW when both units are put into operation, Rainpower reported.
Recently, Rainpower signed a contract with Ofima for the delivery of equipment to the Robiei pumped-storage hydro plant.
