SSE Renewables wins approval for Kildermorie small hydropower project

SSE Renewables, the renewable energy division of Scottish and Southern Energy, has won approval from Scottish ministers to develop a 7.5-MW hydroelectric power station at Kildermorie in Ross-shire, Scotland, SSE reported.

The Kildermorie hydro project will consist of a new dam and storage reservoir at the head of Gleann Mhuire, a buried pipeline running down the glen and a semi-buried powerhouse with associated tailrace built next to the Abhainn na Glasa upstream of Kildermorie Lodge.

SSE renewables project manager Calum Robb said SSE is committed to reducing the carbon intensity of its generation by 50 percent by 2020 and the new hydro plant at Kildermorie will help achieve this target.

Robb said: "Work to address the conditions associated with the consent will now take place, and it is likely that construction work will start within the next twelve months. We anticipate that it will take around two years to complete construction."

SSE currently has 3,660 MW of renewable energy capacity in operation, under construction or with consent for development in the UK and Ireland.

In other news, marine hydro firm Atlantis Resources Corporation announced it has successfully deployed its AK1000 tidal turbine - which Atlantis calls the world's largest rotor diameter tidal turbine - on its subsea berth at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, Scotland.
