Hidropaute awards contract for Sopladora hydro project in Ecuador

Ecuador's state hydro generator Hidropaute awarded consortium China Gezhouba Group-Fopeca the contract to build and put into operation the 487-MW Sopladora hydropower project, wire services reported.

The contract is worth US$672 million, which the Export-Import Bank of China will help finance, according to wire reports.

Sopladora will use water from the Paute River in Azuay and Morona Santiago provinces.

In other news, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva recently signed the concession contract for the construction of the 11,200-MW Belo Monte hydropower plant in Brazil's Amazon.

The document kicks off the construction process for the hydro project, which will be built on the Xingu River in the Amazonian state of Para.
