Sheffield Forgemasters wins contract for Sogamoso hydro project in Colombia

Sheffield Forgemasters International (SFIL) announced it has secured a contract worth more than 1 million euros (US$1.26 million) from Andritz Hydro for work on the Sogamoso hydropower project in eastern Colombia.

Sheffield Forgemasters International will supply runner crowns and runner bands for the Francis turbines to be used in state-run Isagen's Sogamoso hydro project, SFIL announced.

Each casting for the turbines that SFIL will produce takes six months to complete. SFIL will provide four runner crowns weighing in at 22 tons each and four runner bands, at just over 11 tons each.

Based on the studies previously conducted, an installed capacity of 820 MW is anticipated for the Sogamoso project. The hydro project, located on the Sogamoso River, will feature a 190-meter-high concrete face dam.

The contract with Andritz is set to be completed in June 2011.

The Andean Development Corporation in 2009 approved a US$140 million loan to assist with development of the Sogamoso project.
