BC Hydro plans upgrades to Vancouver Island hydropower facilities

Provincial utility BC Hydro intends to invest more than C$1 billion beginning in 2012 to upgrade three hydropower facilities in the Campbell River region of British Columbia's Vancouver Island, wire services reported.

The majority of the money will be spent on upgrading the John Hart Generating Station, which was built in 1947, reports indicate.

The other hydro projects that will get an update are the Strathcona and Ladore facilities. Altogether, the three hydropower projects generate 237 megawatts and produce up to 20 percent of peak demand on Vancouver Island in the summer and 10 percent of peak demand in the winter.

In other news, BC Hydro has selected the final project to be awarded an electricity purchase agreement under the Clean Power Call, bringing the call to a close after acquiring close to 3,300 gigawatt hours per year of clean energy.
