Agreement signed for monitoring of Binga hydro project rehab in Philippines

SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet Inc. plans to work with local government and community groups to rehabilitate and refurbish the Binga hydropower plant in the Philippines, regional media reported.

The creation of a multi-partite monitoring team is a condition under the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) and is a key feature of the Philippine environmental impact assessment system, reports indicate.

The team's primary role is to monitor the project's compliance with the conditions of its ECC.

The 100-MW Binga hydropower plant began its rehabilitation and upgrading this year. The plant's capacity is expected to increase to 120 megawatts by 2014.

SNAP previously reported that the rehabilitation of the first of three units at the 75-MW Ambuklao hydroelectric power plant will be completed in September.

SNAP bought the Ambuklao and Binga hydro projects for $325 million.

SNAP-Benguet is a joint venture of SN Power of Norway and the Aboitiz Group.
