Pumped-storage hydro plant planned for Vietnam

Vietnam is planning to build a pumped-storage hydro project with total capacity of 1,500 megawatts in the country's northern province of Son La in 2013, the government reported.

Government officials have given an in-principle approval to the construction of the hydropower plant, wire reports indicate.

The plant will be the first pumped-storage hydropower project in the country and is designed to be environmentally-friendly, reports indicate.

The plant is expected to be operational in 2018, according to reports.

In other news, the Waldeck 1 pumped-storage hydropower plant recently was officially inaugurated in Germany.

A growing need for energy storage worldwide means pumped-storage hydropower has a pivotal role to play in the future.

A workshop on pumped-storage hydropower is among the pre-conference events scheduled in advance of the upcoming HydroVision International Conference and Exhibition in North Carolina. Conference sessions covering a variety of energy storage and pumped-storage hydropower topics also are included in the upcoming hydro industry event.
