Worldwide industrial services and engineered products company Harsco Corporation announced that its Harsco Infrastructure business has been selected to provide specialized concrete forming equipment and related engineering support for the 1,870-MW Gibe III hydro project now starting construction in Ethiopia.
The Gibe III hydropower project in southern Ethiopia is expected to generate new revenues well in excess of $2 million for Harsco over the next two years as the company supplies special-purpose dam formwork and related engineering support to the concrete construction of the new 243 meter-high dam being built on the Omo River. The plant will supply Ethiopia and its neighbors with up to 1,870 MW of electric power, more than doubling Ethiopia’s power generating capacity. The dam will also provide flood protection for the region and help to regulate water supplies during the dry season.
Recently, Ethiopia and China signed a $459 million agreement for work on the Gibe III hydropower project, with the Chinese government providing a loan for construction costs, local media reported.
