Power Machines to supply hydro units to Sayano-Shushenskaya plant

Russian equipment supplier JSC Power Machines has agreed to supply 10 turbines, nine generators and six excitation systems to the damaged Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric plant, where an accident killed 75 workers in August.

Under the contract, which is worth 11.7 billion rubles (US$402.5 million), Power Machines will complete six hydro-units in 2011. The rest will be completed in 2012. Each unit will have a life-span of 40 years and will operate at 96.6 percent efficiency, the company said.

Repairs to Sayano-Shushenskaya, the biggest hydroelectric plant in Russia, will cost an estimated 40 billion rubles (US$1.4 billion). RusHydro, which owns and operates the plant, is the second largest hydropower producer in the world, with 25,336 MW of capacity.

“This large transaction is vitally important for the restoration of the company’s Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower plant,” said Evgeny Dod, chairman of RusHydro’s Management Board, “and it is also extremely critical, particularly in terms of delivery guarantees and technical tracking, for the equipment operating process.”

The accident occurred Aug. 17 when a sudden surge of water flooded the plant’s turbine room after an explosion. (HydroWorld 8/17/09) A report by government watchdog Rostekhnadzor blamed several executives and government officials for the accident. (HydroWorld 10/5/09)

The plant in southern Siberia had a capacity of 6,400 MW, about 25 percent of RusHydro’s total output.

Power Machines also is supplying nine turbines and nine generators for Russia’s new Boguchanskaya hydroelectric project. The 3,000 MW Boguchanskaya project “is now seen as the most acceptable and effective method to quickly replace capacity from the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant,” Power Machines said.
