NHA applauds increased funding for Waterpower Program

President Obama recently signed into law a measure that provides $50 million to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Waterpower Program, a 25 percent increase in funding.

Linda Church Ciocci, executive director of the National Hydropower Association, said the additional funding “is critical to expanding our clean, renewable hydropower resources.”

Ciocci pointed to an NHA-commissioned study, which found that 700,000 jobs could be created if 60,000 MW of hydropower capacity is added by 2025.

“But, we need the federal R&D leadership that DOE’s Waterpower Program provides to make it happen,” Ciocci said.

“President Obama often speaks of building a clean energy economy, where sectors like the U.S. hydropower industry create jobs, develop new technologies, and serve the public by expanding our base of domestic, renewable resources,” Ciocci said. “Federal support, like this funding for the DOE Waterpower Program, will help to make that a reality.”
