A hydrokinetic project in Hastings, Minn., has been named a finalist in the annual Projects of the Year Awards program organized by the editors of Power Engineering magazine and PennWell Corp.
Developed by Hydro Green Energy LLC, the project involves two hydrokinetic turbines at Mississippi Lock and Dam No. 2. Billed as the first federally-licensed hydrokinetic power project in the United States, the first unit was placed into service earlier this year. The second turbine will be installed next year. Together, the two units will be able to generate up to 250 KW.
The Hastings project is one of three finalists in the renewable/sustainable category. The other two projects are Ausra’s Kimberlina solar thermal power plant in California and eSolar’s Sierra SunTower solar plant, also in California.
