Laws should recognize hydropower as renewable

Hydropower should be deemed a renewable source of energy by federal laws in the United States and Canada, said officials participating in the 33rd Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers.

Such recognition would foster further collaboration on energy projects within the region, they said.

Officials also pointed to a power line project linking Canada and the United States, the first of its kind in 30 years. The high-voltage line will have a capacity to carry 1,200 MW and will service New England from Quebec under long-term contracts.

“We are ready and willing to share our know-how and assist our partners in significantly reducing their greenhouse gas emissions,” said Quebec Premier Jean Charest. “Our hydroelectric resources are part of the long-term solution in this area.”
