Ocean developer awards fabrication contract for European Marine center

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has awarded a steel fabrication contract for the structure of its PowerBuoy wave generator to be installed at the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) in the United Kingdom.

The U.S.-based OPT signed a berth agreement with EMEC in 2008, enabling the wave energy developer to install a 2-MW wave project at the test site in Scotland’s Orkney Islands. (HydroWorld 8/7/08)

OPT said June 11, 2009, that it awarded the steel fabrication contract to Isleburn Ltd. of Inverness, Scotland, a full-service fabrication and engineering company for major offshore structures. Once the steel fabrication is in complete, a 150-kW PowerBuoy is to be fully assembled and ready for deployment at EMEC by the end of 2009, OPT said.

The wave developer said it achieved another milestone in completion of the mechanical elements of the power take-off system for the PB150 model PowerBuoy, the latest development in its product range.

OPT said the berth agreement provides for the deployment and operation of its PowerBuoys as well as their connection to the wave energy berth’s dedicated 2-MW subsea cable already installed and connected to Scotland’s grid. The agreement also allows OPT to sell power to the grid up to 2 MW.

“Once fully demonstrated at EMEC, the company intends to deploy further PB150 PowerBuoys in projects around the world at locations including Reedsport in Oregon, U.S.A.; Victoria, Australia; and Cornwall, U.K.,” an OPT statement said.

OPT has said it also expects to deploy the PB150 in projects elsewhere in the world, including Spain and France. (HydroWorld 4/1/09)
