
Ghana's Volta River Authority (VRA) awarded a 1.9 million euro (US$2.5 million) contract to a joint venture of consultants to carry out emergency preparedness planning for the 1,062-MW Akosombo and 160-MW Kpong hydroelectric projects on the Volta River.
VRA selected a joint venture of Association of Royal Haskoning of the Netherlands and Norplan AS of Norway from among four bidders. (HNN 10/19/06) Other bidders were SMEC International Ltd., Mott MacDonald, and Consulting Engineering Service.
Ghana received a US$45 million credit from the World Bank's International Development Association for the West Africa Power Pool Program (WAPP). In addition to the hydro project work, VRA awarded a US$277,316 contract to Envirosound Associates of Ghana to perform an environmental and social assessment of two proposed transmission lines, part of the WAPP Coastal Transmission Backbone Project. For the hydro projects, Royal Haskoning and Norplan are to evaluate dam safety and prepare emergency preparedness plans and environmental management plans. The plans are to conform to policies of Ghana, international financial institutions, and the World Commission on Dams report.
